Pig Heart Dissection

  9. Is the myocardium of the atrium thicker or thinner than the ventricle? Explain why. - thinner, it does less work
  10. Name the 2 veins that empty into the right atrium. - inferior vena cava, superior vena cava
  11. What is the wall that separates the 2 ventricles called? - interventricular septum
  12. What is the purpose of the pulmonary veins? - they lead to the lungs, they bring oxygenated blood to the heart, and then out to the body
  13. What is the layer of the heart wall that covers the inside of the chambers? What does it look like? - endocardium, it looks grey and stringy
  14. Describe the appearance and feel of the walls of the ventricles. - it is thicker, more rough
  15. How much thicker is your left ventricle from your right? - about twice as thick
  16. What causes a blocked artery in the heart AND what symptoms would indicate a need for bypass surgery? - a buildup of fat, cholesterol, other substances. chest pain indicates need for bypass
  17. Where do they get the bypass vessels from in the body? - usually from the legs
  18. What main vessel do they attach the bypass to? - coronary artery

In this lab we sliced, diced, and dined upon a pig heart. mmmmmm. We used crude dentistry tools to explore the dark and cavernous chambers of the pig heart. We identified various veins, arteries, and valves. We liked the experience of dissection, and disliked the "fluid-slinging" nature of the heart flaps. We would have preferred to have more time to operate on the heart.
